You should choose a rod and reel in the 40-60 lbs class for general sea
fishing in the south of Norway. Hence, you can, without problems, use
jigs and weights of up to 600 grams. The line's breaking strength
should be around 30 kilos. This type of fishing tackle is strong enough
to haul up large fish yet at the same time normal fishing becomes a
challenge. We recommend a belt with a cup to use with this tackle. The
cup is used to support the end of the rod. The reel should have good
capacity, a good brake, good gearing and it should be solid.
When undertaking easier fishing, it is appropriate to use tackle in the
15-40 lbs class, sufficient to cope with jigs and weights of up to 300
grams. The reel should have good gearing, a good and even brake and
preferably be light. Gradually, this has become very popular kit. The
combination of new artificial materials used in lines (for example:
kevlar, dacron, or veering line) allow for even larger fish to be hauled
ashore. The breaking strength is exceptionally great for these types of
lines even at small dimensions. At the same time the line is totally
«dead» so one can quickly feel when one has a bite.
It is important to obtain fishing tackle one can feel at ease with. The
choice is between attaining a lively and challenging sport while at the
same time feeling confident the fish can be hauled ashore without
equipment failure. Fishing with too heavy tackle makes one feel like a
crane operator. If the tackle is too light, fishing will become
strenuous and risky when hauling in the big fish. Often, the visiting
anglers to the south of Norway bring tackle which is too light for sea
fishing. Nevertheless, you can easily supplement your tackle at the
proficient sports shops in Tvedestrand and Risør.
Remember too, comfortable, warm clothes, warm boots, survival suit, hat
and gloves. It can be cold standing still on the sea, even in the
summer.
