Eidselva

Eidselva flows from Norway's deepest lake, Hornindalsvatnet, to the sea at Nordfjordeid. The river is mostly fast flowing with crystal clear water. In between the rapids beautiful pools offer excellent fishing for the flyfisher. In low water conditions even the pockets and current edges in the rapids can be fished with success. For me Eidselva is first of all a early season river with good chances of catching fish over 10 kilos. Over the last few years the stock of heavy early fish has declined, so something has to be done to protect this resource. Later in the season it is possible to catch both salmon, grilse and sea trout in the river, the sea trout can be of superb size and quality.

The river is divided into several beats, most of them accessible to visiting anglers. One good place to check for licenses is the sporte quipment shop in the village. All beats have a maximum number of rods, so there are normally no problems with crowding.

The water is very clear, so for low water fishing it is necessary to be very careful not to frighten the fish. For sea trout in July and August night fishing is advisable.

The picture on this page show an early morning view of Myrahølen, one of the best places for an early season salmon.

TACKLE

I normally use a two handed rod and a heavy reel early in the season. In the cold water a fast sinking line is necessary, and the reel should have at least 30# backing. Later on I go down in size, and in late season a 5-6 weight rod and a fine leader is nice for grilse and sea trout. Tube flies are very popular early in the season, for sea trout I like small wet flies in size 8-12.
