DIRECTORATE FOR NATURE MANAGEMENT

SPORT FISHING IN NORWAY

Regulations for salmon, sea trout, sea char and inland fishing.

General information

Fishing is an enjoyable and useful recreational activity. It is our sincere hope that as many people as possible may experience the pleasure of fishing in Norway today and in the future. The purpose of this virtual pamphlet is to provide information about fishing regulations in Norway. Rules and regulations concerning fishing and other more general information are included. Our objective is to conserve and protect valuable fishery resources to ensure a pleasant fishing experience for everyone. Fishermen should take into account the needs of anglers, other outdoorsmen and of course the countryside. Inconsiderate fishermen have unfortunately contributed to a reduction of fish habitat, e.g. through the careless spreading of minnows. You may help to conserve our fishery resources by following the rules and regulations presented here.

Fishing for anadromous salmonids (salmon, sea trout and sea char) and inland fishing are controlled by regulations for salmon and inland fishing, for which there are state and regional regulations. There are also local regulations established by landowners and others controlling fishing rights. Detailed information on fishing regulations is distributed by those selling fishing licenses, tourist information offices and by the county governor, environmental department (Fylkesmannens miljøvernavdeling). When purchasing a fishing license, you will receive instructions concerning fishing regulations, which are often printed on the back of the license.
