Hardangervidda - Geitvassdalen

This image is from the upper part of Lågen.
A nice trout on 1.25 kg caught in late July on a black muddler during night fishing.
The quality on the fish is excellent!
Geitvassdalen is the most known area for fishing on Hardangervidda. This is the upper part of the big river Numedalslågen. The river is perfect for flyfishing, but many trout also get caught with spinner and worms.

In late August the fish in the lakes are coming up in the river to do what has to be done. It's the fishing at this time of the year that have made the place so famous. The trout can reach sizes of more than 3 kg and are real fighters in the fast running river.

Earlier in the season the fishing can be great to. The whole summer trout around 0.5 kg is standing in the river and if you are lucky you can catch fish up to a couple of kg. If you manage to catch one at this time they are usually blank as a seatrout. Especially night fishing in the slower part of the river can give you some big fish. At the daytime, fishing with streaking dryflies in the fast running parts is very funny.

A great place to start the trip is with boat from Skinnarhovd to Mogen. From Mogen it's about 5-6 hours walking to Lågaros which are in the upper part of Geitvassdalen. Another possibility is to go from Mårbu, to where you come by boat from Stegaros. Walking from Mårbu to the middle part of Geitvassdalen takes around 4 hours. You can also start at Geilo where you reach the lower part of Geitvassdalen.

The fishing in Geitvassdalen is organized under the "Nore og Uvdal Statsallmening", and a card for this whole area can be bought at the tourist stations. But note that the fishing in the still-waters in Lågen belong to privat persons so you are not able to fish in these without a permision from the land owners. See the map "Hardangervidda Øst" for details of where the "Nore og Uvdal Statsallmening" license is valid.
