Hallingdalselva running by the village Nesbyen
(c) Audun Aasheim
After Nesbyen the river is slow and large. In the Bromma area it expands into pools as wide as lakes before shrinking back into to a river-shape down towards Flå and finally the Lake Krøderen. Downstream of Nesbyen the trout share the river with whitefish which are underestimated by fly-fishers, in my opinion. Most consider whitefish a «side-effect» of trout-fishing, but intentionally fished for it presents a real challenge.
Some good advice:
Use small flies, strike gently and play it carefully. Whitefish have small
mouths with poor hooking ability. Don't judge the size of the fish by its
wake, even a two-pounder shows itself off rather modestly. Big trout are
also to be found in this part of the river and present a difficult target
even for the skilled fisherman. These trout prey on small whitefish and
fry.
