Hallingdalselva

Local fishermen often practise flyfishing with spinning gear and a float
(c) Audun Aasheim

Between the villages of Gol and Nesbyen, the Hallingdalselva provides excellent fishing. Here the river is bigger and its flow shifts between slow pools, well suited for long leaders and dry flies, and moderate rapids where attractor or streamer fishing can yield the fish of your life.

I can assure you that it is hard to remain calm when 1-2 kilo trout rise for a zig-zagging Streaking Caddis just three metres away from the rod. This part of the river is very popular, especially during the last couple of weeks of July when massive hatches of Ephemerella Aurivillii usually occur. During the hatch fish as well as the fly-fishers go crazy. Nevertheless, you should be prepared for very selective trout. If your dry fly imitation of the emerged-insect is refused, try instead a hatching insect imitation fished in the surface film. During this period many fishermen gather along the best stretches, but after a few days the locals can peacefully re-enter their favourite places and as you know, the biggest fish still remain to be caught!
