Bingsfossen
By Erling

When we talk about fishing and Glomma, especially fly fishing, most
think about places in the north such as Koppang, Alvdal, Os and the area
around Røros. And quite rightly so, here you can find some of the
best places for grayling and trout in Norway's longest river.
Many fishermen don't know that Glomma with all its side rivers can provide
good game fishing only a few miles from Oslo. Normally it's course fish
that dominate the river, but in the rivers quicker flowing stretches and
rapids you find grayling and trout. The occasional whitefish is also taken
here late in the autumn when they begin their migration from Øyeren
for spawning. Earlier the Bringsfossen area, 40 km northeast of Oslo, had
it's own white fish population, but these mostly disappeared after the
building of a power-station during the seventies.
These lower stretches of Glomma ,from the junction of the big side river Vorma at Rånåsfoss, Bingsfoss and Øyeren contain over 20 different species of fresh water fish. After the river at Bingsfoss was regulated, there was a drastic fall in the excellent grayling population in the area, at the same time many of the trout's spawning grounds where also lost. But luckily some strong flowing stretches of untouched river can still be found in the lower parts, and grayling and trout can still be taken on the rod. And of course there is always the odd obliging whitefish that will fall for fly.
Fishing places and fish:
If I am fishing for Bingsfoss trout, I will often use a silver coloured fly or a woolly bugger. With such patterns I have taken trout up to 3 kg at Bingsfoss. Fished on an intermediate line or a floater with a slow sinking tip. Occasionally bream and ide can be taken on fly. In late spring when grayling are the prey, they will willingly take goldheads, spider patterns and dry flies. In this relatively poor food producing river the fish have no reason to be too particular, and rise well to big flies. Nymphs in a size 8-12 and dry flies in a 10-14 are recommended. In addition to these Zonkers and matukas in sizes 4-6. Glomma is a large river the wind can be severe. A rod of 8 1/2 - 9 1/2 foot for a number 5-7 line is recommended.
Some other good flies for Glomma:
Nymphs: Montana, Prince, Double legs, Stone flies, Shrimp.
Dry flies: Rackelhanen, Streaking caddis, Elk hair caddis, Adams.
Wet flies: March brown, Jungle silver, Olsen, Mallard & Claret, Zulu
silver, Jock scott streamer, Woolly bugger, Matuka Cree silver, Millers
river special, Muddler minnow.
PS! you will find photos of many of the flies here.
