View from Haslefossen
The whole watercourse is habitated with trout, brookies and to some degree,
whitefish. The levels of acidification differs along the river and brookies do
generally cope better with low pH values than trout and whitefish. The ecology
is not very stable in this river. Two years back there was a lot of brookies in
the outlet of Herefossfjorden, today there is almost only trout. At the inlet to
Gauslåfjorden "thousands" of small brookies fight for your fly. Generally there
is a lot of trout and brookies all the way from the mountains down to Birkeland.
They are often small (100-200g) with larger ones (300g-1kg) in between them. To
get the larger ones you seem to have to rely on the hours after dark, where they
leave the safe deep pools to feed near shore or in the nearby currents. The
larger ones are often caught immediatly upstream or downstream from the fjords
on the fly or in the fjords if you use spinning equipment.
Bellow we are looking at specified places along the river. Time and money have not allowed us to deal with important parts of the watercourse like Skjeggedalsåna and Oggevatn. Please keep in mind that the fishery situation changes fast in this river, accellerated by the liming activities now started.
This information is also accessible by use of the fishing resource map.
The beautiful waterfall "Haslefossen" will look like this if the river is exploited for the benefit of hydro-generated power in the future. For more information on this subject and all the information on Tovdalselva in this site we recommend you to look up the index page. More information on how to fish the river is available at Grefstad Jernvarehandel - Grimstad, where Jens Hopp can tell you about brown trout fishing
