About eel
fishing

Eel fishing has a long tradition in the South of Norway. In the eastern part of Aust-Agder the sports fisherman is invited to an organised eel fishery. Here, the experience of nature is combined with the challenge of sport fishing and the prospects for a delightful supper with Europe's most exclusive and sought after fish on the menu.

It is possible to catch fine eel in the many lakes found in the communities of Risør, Tvedestrand, Gjerstad and Vegårshei, also along the coast at the eastern side of the county of Aust-Agder. Many find their eel fishing places in those brackish waters where fresh water blends with the sea water. Here, the eel is especially numerous. The eel is a greedy but a shy predator who prefers waters that are fairly warm.

No reel eel fisherman likes to tell about the best places. Not so with the friendly hosts at the accomodations found in the area. Areas with an organized eel fishing are found at Svart in Gjerstad, The lake Vegår and the Gjeving watercourse outside Tvedestrand. Licenses are affordable, typically NOK 30.- to 50.- a week. These licenses also cower fishing for trout, perch etc. Local licenses are available from the accomodation sites in the spesific area. Licenses for all available areas can be purchased at the Info-Sør Office.
