Aust-Agder offers a lot of opportunities for the angler. The most populated areas are situated along the coast and the people living here is far most concerned about seaside activities during summer. This leaves vast areas for the rest of us who value the silence and beauty of the countryside.

There are mountain areas only accessible by foot and watercourses that are well suited for canoeing. Most of the areas are available through a combination of car and canoe. There are four major rivers flowing here; the Otra, Tovdalselva, Nidelva and Storelva. Lakes of significance are Byglandsfjorden (Otra), Reddalsvannet, Syndle and Landvikvannet inside Grimstad, Nelaugvannet (Nidelva) and the lake Vegår (Storelva).

The fishing that was severely destroyed by acid rain is now recovering after a lot of liming activities. The stock of big-trout in the lake Vegår was preserved by liming, and each year fish on +4 kg is caught on trolling equipment here.

Commercial eel fishing is a tradition in many places. Most of this has been exported to Denmark and Germany, where they know the culinary value of this fish. Now, the Danes and Germans come here to fish the eel themselves and this is simplified by a cooperate work of landowners, camping sites and the tourist organisation Info-Sør.
