Dry Fly's for Salmon - Wulff and Muddlers

Muddler Minnow Dry Fly

Lee Wulff and his dry flies.
In the 1930's Lee Wulff invented a series of dryflies for brown trout. The flies was meant to imitate the biggest caddis flies. Big and hairy, as he made them, the flies got a tremendous floating power. Lee discovered that if he made the flies even bigger, they where also suitable for dryflie fishing after salmon.

The patterns for the classic Grey, White and Royal Wulff was made by Lee Wulff himself, but the others, such as Blonde, Grizzly and Brown Wulff was invented by his good friend Dan Bailey.

Tying Instructions (click on the pictures to get bigger pictures and material list):
All the flies are recommended to be tied on single salmon hook (low-water) size 6 - 10. I prefer Partridge LW Salmon (all of the flies on the pictures are tied on that hook in size 8), or Tiemco LW-hook 7989.
Tie the wing almost 90-degree on the hook, and make it V-shape with some "eight-turns" It is recommended to make the wing before you tie in the tail. The tail should be long and thick. Rub parts or ore the whole flie in with Dry Fly Gel.

Those flies tide on dryfly hooks in sizes 10-12 are also very good for grayling and grown trout. I use Spirit River Celo-Z Wing as wing material on those smaller flies.

Muddler Minnow (Don Gapen)
The Muddler have been amongst my best flies for salmon and sea-trout. I have always been fishing it with floating lines, high in the water, and very often the flie, with it's big head have been almost in the surface.

A couple of incidents the past few years have made me believe that also the bigger salmon's takes the Muddler even when fished like I do with an ordinary dry-fly. After continuos attack’s from the salmon’s, where I, in the beginning, believed that the fish had missed my flie, I started to strike like I do when using dry-fly for brown trout. After that change of technique I started to land the salmon's, the biggest so fare is a 16 kg salmon, who attacked a Muddler like the one on the picture, tied on a single hook size 3.
