THE ELVERHØI FISHING

The Big Pool

To fish the Elverhøi water of the Driva river in Sunndalen is to join a long line of great fishermen starting with the Earl of Leicester in 1857. If fortunate, your fish will be laid out on the huge granite slab in front of the house and your name and the details of your catch will be added to the fishing record book at Elverhøi. In that book you can see photographs of great catches, such as the six salmon averaging 22 lbs. (l0 kgs) caught by the father of the present owner before breakfast on June 20 1921, or the 61 lber (27.7 kgs) caught by his friend the Earl of Stair, along with 13 others caught on July 12 1938. In 1931, guests at Elverhøi caught ll35 seatrout as well as 148 salmon and grilse; on one day in 1939 they caught 23 salmon averaging 18 3/4 lbs (8,5 kgs). That is the history of the Elverhøi fishing.

Sadly the parasite, gyrodactylus salaris, along with increased sea fishing, has hugely reduced salmon numbers. However, the good news is that the parasite does not effect seatrout and these can be very plentiful in the Driva. In 1996 more seatrout where caught in the Driva than in any other river in Norway. There are also big seatrout known as kludd which weight around 9lbs (4 kgs) and are wonderfully exciting to catch.

The Elverhøi estate is co-operating with local landowners and can offer over two miles (4 km) of continuous fishing on the left bank, along with some additional pools a short distance upstream. One of the better seatrout pools is only a short walk from the house and here the fishing is from both banks. One of the features of this water is that it provides the first major rapids that a fish will encounter and it encourages them to pause in our pools before struggling up the rapids on their journey upstream.

At normal river heights there is sufficient fishing for four or five rods, but in high or very low water, when some of the pools are unfishable, five rods might be too many. Preference is given to one party renting all the water and staying at Elverhøi, but it is also possible to rent the house without renting the fishing or to rent the fishing without renting the house. If specially requested, consideration will also be given to parties wanting to lease only part of our fishing. For fly fishing it is suggested that you'll use a double handed rod in order to cover the water properly. Although in the past this was the only method of fishing used, in some of the pools especially in high water, it can be more advantageous to use a spoon as the water can be so fast that it is difficult to get a fly to sink deep enough.
